Its not all Mackies fault, the script did tak dirty in s2. I felt like their "romance" was ham-handed, and contrived. And I gave S1 a pass just because I felt there were so many other redeeming qualities, but S2 was a dumpster fire. The idea that she could be ALL of these things at once as, from what I can tell, an un-augmented human is completely ludicrous.Īgain in this case, I think the actress did as good a job as possible with the material. I posted about this before, her character can defeat multiple armed and experienced soldiers in combat, men who are much more physically powerful by the way, effortlessly, also she's a master of philosophy and psychological manipulation, AND to top it all off, she is apparently so knowledgeable in the various biological and technological disciplines needed to invent stack technology. It's usually indicative of poor or lazy writing. If you're not familiar with the literary concept of a "Mary-Sue" character, do a quick search and read about it. Rei I had some issues with, but I thought the actress did a good job with the material.īut Quell was absolutely abysmally written imo. I won't even touch on S2, as that will make my blood pressure rise lol. And even though the world seemed small, the story was more of a detective/film noir vibe to begin with, so you don't exactly need a massive world (unlike Broken Angels for example), and I thought they captured the ambiance pretty well, they made the show slick and sexy. The change from the Hendrix to the Raven was a positive one for me. What saved S1 for me was I thought they hired some excellent actors, who did a great job with the script. They made her a textbook Mary Sue-like character, able to defeat multiple armed and highly trained men in combat, expert at philosophy and psychological manipulation, AND she invented e on now. On par with that change for me, was changing who/what Quell is. Aside from it being a silly change, they essentially made it impossible to follow the plot of book 3, as Envoys feature heavily into that. Yeah that was my biggest issue with the show vs the book also. From next level shock troops to fckng freedom fighters?! It changed the fundamental nature of the envoys to begin with. Alterec Carbon: Resleeved was the perfect example for that: Completely different setting and only the main character is the same.in a different body. If they want this to succeed there is only one way: Make three different shows. The other fact tying the books together? The background story about the Martians. It's not going to be the same actor in different bodies. But that doesn't translate so well to the visual medium. The narrator didn't change even if his appearance did. On top of that one of two things really tying these three books together was the fact that they were all written from one perspective. You can't reuse any of the actors because none of the important ones in Altered Carbon were any kind of clone. The only way this would have ever worked? If they hadn't called the second season a second season.īroken Angles and Woken Furies are just very different from Altered Carbon and even from each other.Īnd not just the style is different. Don't discuss spoilers on non-spoiler tagged posts without using spoiler "code" >!Your Text Here!!Your Text Here!Don't put spoilers in the title of your post.ALTERED CARBON is set in a future where consciousness is digitized and stored in cortical stacks implanted in the spine, allowing humans to survive physical death by having their memories and consciousness "re-sleeved" into new bodies.
